(A) Airway

Airway DRSABCD

In the event of a car crash, you should avoid moving a patient until help arrives, as it could lead to further injury. Only move them if it is absolutely necessary (e.g. the vehicle may explode).

In most cases, the person involved in the crash will likely be seated upright in a car seat. Open their mouth to check if the airway is clear. A blockage could be caused by foreign material, or the tongue could obstruct the airway if the person is unconscious.

If the airway is blocked:

Wear personal protection on your hands, such as gloves or a cloth, and open their mouth, clearing the airway with your fingers. Once cleared, lift their person’s chin and move their jaw forward.

If the airway is clear:

Leave them in place, lift their person’s chin, and move their jaw forward. This will help open their airway and allow them to breathe.
